Proverbially, March is supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb. This year, March came in a bit on the lionish side and looks set to leave like Godzilla, leaving a trail of destruction behind it. Last night saw major weather problems througout Scotland and Northern Ireland, with up to 30 cm of snow in some places, and high winds pretty well everywhere. There are numerous reports of fallen trees and roads blocked by snow, and this time it looks like it might actually be genuine, and not your usual British overhyping of mediocre weather. Monifieth, as usual, missed the worst of it, as all the precipitation was liquid, but the winds were pretty strong (as the fence in my back yard can verify).
The wind peaked here with a gust of 75.6 km/h just after midnight, although the average speed was around 30 km/h. Not hurricane force by any means but still pretty blustery. The temperature didn't reach even 4 C yesterday, making it the coldest day since 19 February (and feeling a lot colder due to the wind), and dragging the mean temperature for March down into negative territory again. With only 12 hours to go until the end of the month, and the temperature unlikely to breach 5 C today, another below average temperature for the month seems pretty well certain.
